Fighter's History from Data East was like many other "me too" titles to emerge from the fighting game boom of the early 90's, thanks to the success of Street Fighter 2. Perhaps too so for the folks behind Street Fighter, Capcom, hence their decision to sue Data East for what they felt were uncomfortable similarities, ranging from the game's characters to even the control scheme.
Ultimately, the case was dismissed, and in Data East's defense, it's not as if they were the only ones who were ripping off Capcom's winning formula. But most are unaware of the situation's irony; five years prior, Data East attempted to sue another game publisher, Epyx, for its World Karate Championship, which they felt was too close to their own fighting game, Karate Champ. Again, the case was dismissed and labeled by most as frivolous.
